Selleck, Smits, Smallville, Supernatch', and the Super Creepy Dateline Guy

All hail the DVR! No longer must we choose between going out on the town, and painting said town red, versus staying home for Friday night television, feeling like that kid in Can’t Buy Me Love (“the white-people re-make of Love Don’t Cost a Thing” according to “Community”). Speaking of Can’t Buy Me Love, do you think Patrick Dempsey, Neil Patrick Harris, Anthony Michael Hall, and Brian Austin Green all belong to some club of Men Who Look Better Now Then They Ever Did as Teen Idols??

Here’s what’s going to be on besides “The Soup”, Fridays this Fall:

FRIDAY

8pm

Secret Millionaire ABC, premieres TBD
Wealthy people go undercover in the ghettos and barrios and whatever else people call bad neighborhoods and find unsung heroes to award large sums of money to.  AWKWARD.

Medium CBS, premieres 9/24
Medium: The Sixth SeasonI don’t know why I continue to watch, and also continue to kinda love this show. It’s a lot of the same (Alison still wakes her poor husband up every time she has a bad dream) but the guest stars are usually pretty skilled and they must be doing something right because this show keeps on rising from the grave (oooh, much like the ghosts that help Alison solve crimes!) WORDPLAY!

Smallville CW, premiers 9/24
Where we left off: Clark kissed Lois as the Blur, but she recognized the tongue in her mouth, so now she FINALLY knows. Oliver was kidnapped by people who were “not Kandorians”, after telling Chloe he loves her, because...they have been together three weeks and if you don’t keep Chloe fans happy they shout all over the internets.
What’s next: Darkseid (I don’t read comics, so I am not at all sure of what exactly that entails, as far as a season-long nemesis). Also, bringing back everyone who was ever on the show who doesn’t currently have a better career (so “No” to Ian Somerhalder and Jenson Ackles, but “YES” to Bo Duke, Lucy and Sam Lane, Aquaman, Lionel Luther, etc…). Also we see the red & blue suit (its been 10 years, its about freakin’ time). What else is it time for? That’s right. SuperSex. Erica Durance and Tom Welling are ridiculously hot and the fact that they aren’t naked together, always, is a travesty.

Human Target: The Complete First Season
Human Target FOX, premieres 10/1
I love me some Mark Valley but I already watched this show when it was called “MacGyver”. And it changed time slots like a million times last year, or maybe it didn’t and I just forgot about it. Either way, I don’t watch. But someone must, as its back for a 2nd season. With a new female lead. So there you have it.

Who do you Think you Are/School Pride NBC
I am obsessed with celebrities, and not even I care about their geneology. And to be honest, I’m too uninterested to even google “School Pride”.  As I understand it, its like “Extreme Home Makeover” for various public schools across the country.

9pm

Body of Proof ABC, premieres TBD
Dana Delany (YEA!!) stars as a neurosurgeon whose career ends after she gets in a car accident so she becomes a medical examiner and helps solve crimes (YAWN).  This sounds like a combination of “Crossing Jordan” and all those lady-led shows I don’t watch on TNT (“Closer”, “Hawthorne”, the one where Holly Hunters hair is really messy, etc…)

CSI:NY CBS, premieres 9/24
Where we left off: That poorly-aging kid from “Terminator 2” was coming after Danny and Lindsay! Shots fired!
What’s next: We find out where the shots land! Permanent contract disputes mean Stella disappears into the mist with most likely minimal explanation. Sela Ward joins the cast to help Lieutenant Dan solve murders in NYC.

Supernatural CW, premieres 9/24
Where we left off: In the usual place, a narrowly averted Apocalypse. The season ended with Dean trying to live a normal life with and Sam trapping Lucifer back in Hell – only to mysteriously appear outside Lisa’s house!
What’s next: All reports are saying the show is set on returning to its roots, specifically Season 1, when the beautiful brothers hunted someone or something new every episode (known as MOTW or Monster-Of-The-Week episodes). New show-runner Sera Gamble is promising to cut back on the twisty mythology, thus avoiding the “Alias”/”X-Files” trap, so who knows, maybe this year we will be spared a season-ending impending apocalypse! Maybe no Winchesters will end up trapped in Hell! Maybe Dean will stop with the weeping and maybe, just maybe, there will be an entire episode about the magical powers of Sam’s arms.

Good Guys FOX, premieres 9/24
I have no problem with Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford played a huge part in my formative years ("Adventures in Babysitting", "Billy Madison", "The West Wing", "Studio City on the Sunset Trip" – haha, just kidding about that last one, that show sucked).
But if I wouldn’t watch this show during the summer when NOTHING was on, I’m certainly not watching it now. Also, moustache = FAIL.

Dateline NBC NBC, premieres 9/24
More investigative reporting, often by that creeper Keith Morrison.

10pm

20/20 ABC, premieres 9/24
Investigative reporting, no longer with that creeper John Stossel

Blue Bloods CBS, premieres 9/24
There’s the Tom Selleck I despise (from those “Jesse Stone” TV movies, and every time the actor tries to get political – SHUT UP already Tom!). And then there’s the Tom Selleck I love, as Richard on “Friends” or in “3 Men and a Baby”. So this could go either way. But the promo, featuring Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan and Will Estes (the brother from American Dreams!) all playing members of crime-fighting NYC family, looks good.

Outlaw NBC, premieres 9/24
Jimmy Smits stars as a Supreme Court judge who grows disillusioned and quits because the entire judicial system is flawed and by the time cases get to him its too late to be fixed. So he goes into private practice, determined to right wrongs and damn the man and… yeah we get it, he’s a saint. If in fact you are home at this time on Friday, wouldn’t you rather be drinking wine and watching old “Friends” DVDs?  I know I would.
